Podcast Cover Art: Cutting Out a Host Photo for Album Art

Podcast cover art shows up at thumbnail size in Spotify, Apple Podcasts, and every directory that lists the show. Small scale means any clutter in the photo reads as noise. A clean cutout of the host over a bold background is the pattern that works best at that size.

Steps

  1. 01

Pick a photo of the host

Front-facing or three-quarter angle. Well-lit. The background does not matter because it is being replaced.

  2. 02

    Process with Transparent output

    Download the PNG with alpha.

  3. 03

    Composite over a graphic background

Open in the editor. Add a solid colour, bold gradient, or a designed backdrop in your show's brand colours.

  4. 04

    Export at 3000 by 3000

Apple Podcasts requires cover art between 1400 and 3000 pixels square. 3000 is the recommended size.

Tips

  • —Design at 3000 by 3000 even if you think you will not need it. Apple recommends this size explicitly.
  • —Cover art appears at roughly 100 by 100 pixels in directory listings. Test your design at that size before committing.
  • —Text on cover art should be large enough to read at thumbnail size. Small text becomes unreadable.
  • —Use a single dominant colour. Shows with clean colour stories are more recognisable in a grid of similar thumbnails.

Common questions

Can I use a selfie for podcast cover art?

If the lighting is good, yes. Phone photos work fine for thumbnail scale. Higher resolution sources are better if you plan to use the art on merchandise or promotional materials.

What about multiple hosts?

Process each host separately, then composite all the cutouts into a single layout. The editor supports multiple image layers.

Does Spotify have different requirements?

Spotify follows Apple's requirements for cover art. Same resolution and format. If it works on Apple Podcasts, it works on Spotify.
