Video background removal without a green screen

A green screen requires a physical setup: chroma cloth, even lighting on the cloth, the subject far enough forward to avoid spill. If you are recording at a desk or on a phone, that is not practical. This tool works on the video itself instead of the setup.

Every frame is sent to a segmentation model that identifies the subject. The mask is applied, the frames are reassembled into a new video, and the original audio is reattached. The result is an MP4 with an alpha channel, ready to composite over any background in an editor.

What the tool actually does

  1. 1. Extract frames. The video is decoded in the browser using FFmpeg. Frames are pulled at the target FPS.
  2. 2. Segment each batch. Frames are sent to the segmentation model in batches of four. The AI resolution is 384p regardless of output size, because the mask does not need to be pixel-perfect.
  3. 3. Rebuild the video. The mask is applied to each frame at the original output resolution. FFmpeg re-encodes to H.264 MP4.
  4. 4. Reattach audio. The original audio track is preserved end-to-end and muxed back on.

Settings that matter

Output resolution
480p is the default and finishes fastest. 720p and 1080p look cleaner if the clip is going to be played full-screen. Higher resolution takes proportionally longer.
Frame skip
Zero processes every frame. Higher values skip every other, every third, and so on. Skipping frames cuts processing time and can produce a slightly choppier result. For talking-head clips, frame skip of 2 is a good balance.
Format
Input: MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI. Output: MP4 with H.264 and preserved audio.

What works, what does not

Works well

  • — Talking-head videos against a plain background
  • — Product demos with the object in focus
  • — Slow-moving subjects
  • — Short social clips under 30 seconds

Struggles with

  • — Fast motion (edge flicker)
  • — Complex hair and fur in motion
  • — Clips over 100MB
  • — Videos longer than 1 minute (trim first)

Common questions

How long does a video take?

A 10 second clip at 480p finishes in 1 to 3 minutes. A 30 second clip takes 3 to 6 minutes. Longer clips should be trimmed before uploading.

Is audio preserved?

Yes. The original audio track is extracted, held aside, and reattached to the processed video.

Do I need a green screen?

No. The AI model identifies the subject in each frame without any physical setup. It works best when there is contrast between the subject and the background, but it does not require a chroma key.

Can I process video on my phone?

Yes. The tool runs entirely in the browser. Upload from your camera roll, wait for processing, save the result. Batch and long clips are easier on a desktop.

What is the output format?

MP4 with H.264 and a preserved alpha channel. It imports into Premiere, Final Cut, DaVinci Resolve, and CapCut.
