Migrating from the Clipdrop API to Remova

Clipdrop was acquired by Jasper in 2024. If you were using their background removal API in a production pipeline, you have probably seen the pricing changes and the deprecation notices. This page is for developers who need to move off it without rewriting their entire pipeline.

Why people look for an alternative

  • —Pricing structure changed after the acquisition. Many tiers were removed or repriced.
  • —Documentation became less detailed and harder to find.
  • —API stability is no longer guaranteed for legacy tiers.
  • —You may be paying for features you do not use (upscaling, relighting, text removal).

Request shape

  1. 01POST to the image endpoint with a multipart form containing the file.
  2. 02Pass model, transparent, and quality as query parameters.
  3. 03Receive a PNG back directly in the response body.
  4. 04The X-Model-Used and X-Processing-Time headers tell you what ran and how long it took.

There is no API key on the public tier. If you need a key for higher limits, that is planned but not required for getting started.

Migration notes

From
Clipdrop POST /remove-background
To
POST /api/process/image

What changes

  • —Clipdrop required an API key. Remova does not on the public tier.
  • —Clipdrop returned a JSON payload with a URL. Remova returns the image bytes directly.
  • —Clipdrop's image argument was a file upload. Remova also accepts a file upload, but with simpler parameter names.
  • —Clipdrop charged per request. Remova is free with a rate limit.

Common questions

Is there a drop-in compatibility mode?

No. The request shape is simpler, but not identical. You will need to change the URL, drop the API key header, and parse the response as a blob instead of JSON.

Can I still use Clipdrop for other tasks?

Yes. This page is only about background removal. If you use Clipdrop for upscaling or text removal, keep it for those.

What about uptime?

The backend runs on Hugging Face infrastructure. It sleeps when idle and wakes on the first request. For latency-sensitive pipelines, warm it with a health check.
