Depop Listing Photos: Background Removal for Vintage Sellers

Depop is a visual marketplace. The algorithm prioritises listings with clean photos, and buyers scroll past anything that looks cluttered. Standardising your photo backgrounds is the cheapest upgrade you can make to a shop.

Steps

  1. 01

    Pick your background style

Pure white reads as clean and professional. A flat coloured background in your shop palette reads as a curated vintage aesthetic. Either works. Mixing them across a shop looks broken.

  2. 02

Batch process in groups of 20

Upload up to 20 photos at a time. Same settings for every batch keeps the output consistent.

  3. 03

    Crop to a square

Depop uses square thumbnails. Crop the result to 1:1 in the editor before uploading.

  4. 04

    Upload to Depop

Depop does not have a bulk image upload. Each listing needs the processed image uploaded individually.

Tips

  • —Depop allows up to four photos per listing. The first one is the thumbnail, so make it the cleanest shot.
  • —For vintage items with character, a subtle background colour in your shop palette reads as more curated than pure white.
  • —Natural light photos produce the cleanest cutouts. Take photos near a window.
  • —Depop compresses uploads. Upload at 1500 pixels on the long side for the best retention.

Common questions

Should I remove the background for try-on photos?

No. Depop allows on-model photos and they usually perform well for clothing. Only the flat-lay photos need background removal.

What resolution should I upload?

1500 pixels on the longest side. Higher resolution does not survive Depop's compression.

Can I use the same background on Depop and Poshmark?

Yes. Both accept standard square images. Consistency across platforms helps if you cross-list.
