How to make a professional headshot from a casual photo

Process a good photo with Transparent output, then composite over a subtle background in the editor.

Steps

  1. 01

    Pick the photo

Front-facing, good lighting on the face, neutral expression. The background does not matter.

  2. 02

    Process with Transparent output

    Download the PNG.

  3. 03

    Composite over a subtle background

In the editor, add a soft gradient or muted colour. Deep navy, forest green, or soft grey all read professional.

  4. 04

    Crop to square

Headshots are usually square. Keep your shoulders in the crop.

Tips

  • —Avoid overly stylised backgrounds. Business environments read as professional.
  • —Keep your expression neutral. Smiling is fine, but not exaggerated.
  • —Wear solid colours. Patterns distract from the face.
  • —The photo should be recent. Using an old photo reads as suspicious.

Common questions

Should the background be solid or gradient?

Gradient reads more "photographed" than solid. A subtle fade from dark to lighter works well.

What about passport-style white backgrounds?

White backgrounds look like ID photos, not professional headshots. Only use white if the recipient explicitly asks.

Can I use this for a team page?

Yes. Process each person's photo, then composite them all onto the same background colour.
