Steps

  1. 01

    Check your country requirements

Look up the exact dimensions and background colour. Most countries accept white or off-white. A few accept light blue.

  2. 02

    Take a suitable photo

Front-facing, neutral expression, eyes open, no glasses. Any background works because it is being replaced.

  3. 03

    Process with White output

Set the output to White and process.

  4. 04

    Crop to the required dimensions

Use the editor to crop the photo to the exact size your country requires. Common sizes are 35x45mm (UK, most of EU) or 2x2 inches (US).

  5. 05

    Print on photo paper

Take the file to a print shop or use a photo printing app. Passport photos are 300 DPI minimum.

Tips

  • —Lighting should be even on both sides of the face. No shadows on the background.
  • —If you are wearing glasses, take the photo without them. This is now a requirement in most countries.
  • —Neutral expression. No smiling.
  • —If your photo has a coloured background in the original, the tool will still work. Just make sure the original has good contrast between you and the wall.

Common questions

Can I use a selfie?

You can, but phone cameras distort the face at close range. A photo taken by another person at a metre distance is better.

What if I need a blue background?

Use the background tool in the editor to replace the white background with a solid blue.

Does this work for visa photos?

Yes. Visa requirements are usually the same as passport requirements. Some countries have specific pixel dimensions.
